Oct 1, 10 - Welcome
My hybrids at (2010)

For those of you living in Europe, White Caucasus is available for the first time from http://www.Bulbs-Bollen.nl

I was quite pleased with a number of this year's new hybrids. It is hard to pick favorites because they each have their own unique personalities. 03-AQ-1, 03-HW-1, 05-GQ-1 and 03-HW-1 are excellent examples of one of my main goals - to create beautiful new patterns.

Unfortunately we had unusually hot weather (30C) during bloom at the beginning of April. As a result a lot of the hybrids "melted" before I could hybridize them -- so many were ready to hybridize all at the same time, plus with the heat they didn't last as long as they normally would. Typically during main bloom I focus on the newest hybrids first and get to the older ones when I have a chance. Normally this means one area of older bulbs will be gotten to one day and another the next. This year by the time I had a chance to look at some of the older varieties they were too far along to even try hybridizing. A compounding factor was the upside down dish pans that I use to cover the flowers to keep the bees and other insects from interferring with my crosses, as well as protecting them from the elements: rain, snow, and wind (i.e. blowing the pollen before I have a chance to collect it). In this situation they actually trapped the heat and aged the flowers even faster.
A number of new features have been aded to the web site:
 •  'Children' (pod and pollen) have been added to the Individuals pages where applicable
 •  'By Year, etc.' shows 1) the hybrids by the year the were crossed, 2) the sxdxc hybrids by the type of cross
 •  more photos are shown per page (reducing the number of pages slightly)

Note: the 'faster' pages, which load faster because they have smaller photos, have not been updated.
