March 25, 2003 - Welcome
Bloom started on March 24 with sophenensis x danfordiae hybrids opening at the front of the house a day ahead of Talish selfs. Those first few flowers were in an area were the snow had disappeared first. Quite a number of buds were showing colour, particularly on F1 sxd hybrids. I was pleasantly surprised to see such an enormous number of sxd buds. I had searched that area last fall for bloom-sized bulbs to send to England for showing. I did find some, but had been disappointed at not enough different clones with large enough bulbs. It would seem that either I wasn't looking in the right spots, or some of the bulbs I thought were too small, were actually large enough to bloom.

A number of the flowers that opened on the 24th happened to be F2 sxd hybrids.

The most exciting hybrid of the day turned out to be 98-MN-1. This is the first clear break from danfordiae's yellow! Note that this was not a back cross onto danfordiae. 89-Q-7 was one of the few F1 sxd hybrids to have a bit of yellow. I believe there may be a second, more obscure parallel path to yellow than just the main recessive one I mentioned last year.

Note also that it is a bicolour!!

Not far behind was 98-OK-1 (91-FC-1 x danfordiae). This is the 6th "spotted light blue-green," though as such I wouldn't say it is spotted.

Click through to additional pictures of each.
