March 16, 04 - Welcome
Bloom started on March 5th, some 3 weeks ahead of schedule. The 30 cm of snow cover had slowly been disappearing, then on the 5th temperatures shot up to 18 C. Just as quickly they returned to seasonal values.

That first bloom was of a hyrcana Talish seedling at the front of the house. Over the past couple of years they have typically been the first to bloom.

The hybrids that are currently open, are the same early varieties that were first to open last year. This fact is something that should be promoted. I expected 98-NP-9 would be overlooked because of it's purple colour - not different enough from existing colours. In fact it's the earliest purple to bloom, and it's quite a nice one.

"Creating A Rainbow"
That was the title of a talk I gave to the Adirondack chapter of NARGS (North American Rock Garden Society) on March 20th. I had a wonderful time down in Ithaca New York. It was surprising to see how much snow they had when Toronto and Buffalo were both virtually bare. Robin Bell had a lovely pink Hellebor poking through the snow, along with several Reticulatas in bloom against his house, including a nice clump of Katharine Hodgkin.
